Before Honour is Humility
The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom;
and before honour is humility.
Have you ever seen one of the principles of Proverbs personified in someone’s life? Sadly we see this happen too seldom. I experienced something today that I have never witnessed before. I attended the funeral of an acquaintance who to my knowledge never had a steady job because he was to busy helping people to have time for one.One wouldn’t find his name in the newspaper except this week in the obituaries. He never married and had a family because he was a brother and father to so many who lost theirs. He gave beyond his ability to give.
Commonly a person like this without any credentials or prestige or laurels would just pass into eternity noticed only by a few. In spite of his humble life his mile-long motorcade wound through the streets of a community that will not be the same without him. As his procession passed several places where he frequented, the staff and patrons honoured him by standing in front of their closed places of business with hats off and flags at half-mast! What a profound personification of the principle of humble service!
Charles Haddon Spurgeon states in his Evening Devotions of “before honour is humility”, “Humility makes us ready to be blessed by the God of all grace, and fits us to deal efficiently with our fellow men. True humility is a flower which will adorn any garden.”
If a person seeks honour he may get a little, but if someone humbly serves great honour will be given by God.
