I want you to close your eyes and think about a peaceful quiet meadow with a babbling brook flowing through it… That peaceful meadow is what you think your life is,,, And that babbling brook is the way you really think. Your thoughts are bumbling recklessly downhill bashing into everything in their path. Smashing into rocks and mudbanks and sandbars as though it could wash it all into the ocean. Sometimes the stream of your thoughts gets out of control and become a dangerous raging torrent.
Then down at the lower end of that meadow is a place where that stream enters a pond. The current slows down and the sediment (muck) falls to the bottom and the lighter current load (debris) floats to the surface. Hopefully clearing your head of muck and debris. That’s the idea that Solomon is trying to get across in Proverbs 4 and verse 26.“Pond” is actually an ancient verb that isn’t used anymore (I wonder why) that means “Ponder” or to think about something.
Thinking is something that very few people do anymore.
That’s why they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering and there is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons! God put this in the Bible because He didn’t want us to follow the world’s pattern of thought.
Pr 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Pr 4:24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
Pr 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Pr 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Pr 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
