Immanuel or Ichabod
Today when people have children, the parents usually choose names for them because they like the sound of the names or they name them after someone else in the family, but in Bible times most of the names chosen for children had some meaning attached to them.
One such name is recorded of a boy born to the wife of Phineas the son of Eli the priest as she heard the news that her husband and Father-in-law had both died and the Ark of God was taken in battle.
I Samuel 4:20) And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21) And she named the childIchabod, saying,The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
There is another name that is prophesied of a boy that was to be born whose name would mean almost exactly the opposite. The prophecy is in Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
The fulfillment of this Prophecy came in Matthew 1: 23, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” This Immanuel is the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ who came to this earth for the specific purpose to die on the cross for your sins. When we are born again by the blood of Jesus Christ, He in the person of the Holy Spirit dwells within our spirit.
Have you accepted this wonderful gift of salvation and taken the name Immanuel, God with us, or are you still in living under the burden of your sin which has condemned you to hell?
Paul tells us in II Corinthians 13:5, Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Immanuel, God with us; or Ichabod, The glory is departed?
